I really loved the way that New Girl has addressed Zooey Deschanel’s cloying cutesy way of life while at the same time also addressing the sexy dude’s chick that Lizzy Caplian tends to play. Both type of in their extreme can be the most annoying thing, and I tend to think that Zooey tips more into annoying me because I don’t know her, while I think if I actually knew Lizzy’s characters (like many other guy’s girls I know in life) I’d find her more manipulative of men and probably hate her even though I’ve loved her in about everything I’ve seen on TV. Here’s the deal about girls who don’t get along with other girls—it’s a self-fulfilling prophecy; You go in with a bad attitude of what you expect other girls to think of you and because of that attitude they don’t like you and behave exactly like you expected. It’s just a cycle.
I’m not articulating this well, but I just wanted to comment on how extremely surprised I am that a comedy that I didn’t have much hope for, was able to discuss openly and fairly how annoying Jess can be and how annoying Lizzy can be—while not saying that one way of being a girl was better or worst the other. It was very refreshing.
